This is probably one of the most interesting reasons to visit Fort William. Its 1345 metres high will not leave you indifferent and the top of the mountain is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano.
The first recorded ascent was made by an Edinburgh botanist in 1771. Since then it has been climbed more than 100,000 times a year. The easiest way to climb it is from Achentiee Farm, following the Mountain Route. The route was built in the 19th century to link the village with the observatory that operated at the top. Despite its age it is in very good condition. If you are an experienced climber you can try the route from Torlundy.
