Especially in summer, Inverness is a city that welcomes many visitors. The main reason for this is its proximity to Scotland's most famous loch, Loch Ness. Between Inverness and the centre of Loch Ness, there is only a distance of 20km, but the proximity to Loch Ness is not the only reason for its many visitors.
Inbhir Nis in Scottish Gaelic means "the mouth of the River Ness". And that location at the mouth of the river and with direct access to the Moray Firth and therefore the North Sea, has made the town a strategic point in almost every war in Scotland.
The first settlers were the Picts, who settled on the banks of the River Ness in the 6th century. They were visited by St Columba to Christianise King Brude. In the 12th century, King David granted it the name of a burgh. During the Middle Ages, clan feuds between the lords of the Isles against the lords of Inverness and the kings of Scotland were constant. James I held a meeting in the 15th century at the castle with the chiefs of the northern clans and attempted to pacify the area. But the MacDonald clan attacked the meeting. It will not be the last time a king has trouble in Inverness. Mary Stuart will see the governor of the castle ban her from the castle and not recognise her as the rightful queen of Scotland. This time the Clan Fraser and the Clan Munro will take the castle for her.
