The Palace and Abbey of Holyroodhouse

The Palace and Abbey of Holyroodhouse

Este lugar histórico ofrece una rica herencia real, impresionantes obras de arte y la oportunidad de explorar la vida de una famosa reina.
At the other end of the Royal Mile you can find the abbey and palace of Holyroodhouse. The name Holyrood comes from the words holy, which means sacred, and rood, an old name for cross. Thus, its meaning would be Holy Cross.

The palace has been the residence of the ancient kings and queens of Scotland since the 15th century. It spans six centuries of history. It was built on the site of a former abbey guesthouse in 1498 and was one of the residences of the Queen of England. The Palace of Holyroodhouse was also part of her final tour of the United Kingdom.

What you can see today is the result of numerous extensions and renovations. Inside you can admire the period furniture, the Queen's Gallery, and the most beautiful tapestries and paintings. This building owes part of its fame to Mary Stuart. You cannot miss a visit to the tower where she lived the most intense moments of her life. By the way, if you want to know more, here is a brief biography of Scotland's most famous queen.

The abbey was built long before the palace. It was built by order of King David I of Scotland in 1128. It was to be the venue for numerous coronations and marriage ceremonies. Throughout its history it would pass through various hands and suffer numerous assaults. The roof collapsed in the 19th century and has remained in ruins ever since.
