The famous Loch Ness stretches 37km along a geological cleft (Great Glen) from Fort Augustus to almost the city of Inverness. This loch, like others with which it is connected, originated from an ancient glacier.

Its fame reached virtually the whole world during the 1930s thanks to the alleged sightings of a plesiosaur that may have survived to the present day. Locals claim to have sighted it on numerous occasions and even took photographs of it. As time went on, the Loch Ness monster became known as Nessie and became one of Scotland's biggest attractions.

But Loch Ness is much more than the famous monster: its banks are home to extraordinary flora and fauna, and its historical heritage is no less impressive. Several towns are worth a visit, including Dores to the north, Inverfarigaig to the south and Drumnadrochit to the west, among others.
