Greyfriars Kirkyard
One of the most iconic stops on the Harry Potter tour in Edinburgh, where real history inspired some of the saga's most iconic characters.
Greyfriars Kirkyard is one of Edinburgh's most visited sites and an essential stop for Harry Potter fans. Within this space rich in history and symbolism, we visit the grave of William McGonagall, whose surname inspired Professor Minerva McGonagall, one of Hogwarts' most beloved figures.
From the cemetery, we also look out at George Heriot's School, widely considered a clear visual reference for the Hogwarts house system with its striking architecture and inner courtyards. Additionally, we visit the tomb of Thomas Riddell, whose name was key to the creation of Lord Voldemort and his famous anagram. Greyfriars bridges literature, history, and legend, showing how Edinburgh left a direct imprint on the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.
