Skye Museum of Island Life

Skye Museum of Island Life

Thatched blackhouse museum on Skye, illuminating Hebridean life and Flora MacDonald’s Jacobite story.
Set on the northern tip of Skye, the Skye Museum of Island Life is a cluster of restored thatched blackhouses presenting traditional Hebridean life from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Exhibits of domestic interiors, tools and textiles reveal the harsh realities and strong community ties that shaped Gaelic culture. Interpretive panels explore themes that resonate with Outlander, including emigration, clan history and the aftermath of the Jacobite era. Nearby stands a memorial to Flora MacDonald, the heroine who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after Culloden. The museum offers a vivid, authentic insight into the world that followed the failed Rising.
