The Hermitage

The Hermitage

Un bosque impresionante con rutas accesibles, cascadas y la oportunidad de ver salmones. Ideal para los amantes de la naturaleza y la sostenibilidad.
North of Edinburgh, near the village of Dunkeld, you have one of Scotland's most beautiful woodlands, The Hermitage. Part of its beauty is due to the tributaries of the River Tay running through the woodland. Its fame began in the 18th century, when it was valued as an ideal recreation area for nature and landscape lovers.
Some of its routes were designed by the Dukes of Atholl in that century, making The Hermitage a pleasant walk. Just past Dunkeld you will see signs to the car park and information panels with the different routes. The easiest is the Path to The Hermitage. It will take you about an hour to complete (round trip).

If you follow the path that meanders parallel to the River Braan, you can admire, depending on the time of year, the salmon that climb upstream to spawn. All this under the shade of alders, willows, ashes, beeches and, above all, Douglas firs. The latter are the trees that have the honour of being the tallest in the whole of the UK at over 60 metres high.

If you finally decide to visit, we recommend two unique enclaves among so much nature: Ossian's Hall, also known as the Hall of Mirrors; and Ossian's Cave, the poet's cave. The first is a viewpoint next to the bridge. It was built in 1757 to admire the cascades of the River Braan and was once decorated with mirrors and paintings. Today it has been renovated and is a must-see. The Poet's Cave is much simpler. It is only a stone building built in the same century and its beauty has more to do with the green mantle that surrounds it.
This forest, after so many centuries of enchanting the locals, has become an attraction for tourists. It is protected under the Scottish National Trust. This same organisation has adapted several paths, making them suitable for the disabled. In addition, all the proceeds from the car park go towards the upkeep of this splendid site. A true example of sustainability.
