Portree
Este encantador puerto histórico atrae a viajeros por su rica herencia cultural, paisajes impresionantes y conexiones literarias, como la saga de Harry Potter.
The name Portree comes from the Gaelic 'Port-an-Righ' which translates as 'Port of the King'. Formerly known as Kiltraglen, the town is believed to have changed its name after King James V of Scotland undertook a persuasive voyage to the island accompanied by his fleet of warships. There he tried to unite the clans of MacLeods and MacDonalds in order to get them to support his interests.
Portree is known for being the scene of a number of historic events in the country. It was at the Royal Hotel (formerly MacNab's Inn) that Bonnie Prince Charlie said his final farewell to Flora MacDonald in 1746, which was to be the subject of the popular Outlander theme song "The Skye Boat Song". It was also from this port that many people set sail for North America in the early 18th century, a time of famine and overpopulation on the island.
In the 19th century Portree became known as the business centre of Skye, as it had convenient access for steamships leaving from Glasgow. It was during this period that the town began to become more prominent as a tourist attraction, developing into the busy region it is today. In fact, the number of tourists has grown to such an extent that the city's occupancy doubles during the peak visitor season.
If you're a fan of the Harry Potter literary saga, you've probably heard of this town before, as it is the namesake of one of the Quiddich teams, the Pride of Portree. It is also featured in the film "My Girlfriend's Wedding".
